Where to Eat in Bamberg: The Restaurants and Beer Halls We’d Recommend

We only had one night in Bamberg, and it included getting turned away from the one place we actually planned around. This is the honest version of where we ate and drank, plus the brewhouses that came up again and again while we were researching, the ones we'd try first next time.

Where We Actually Ate

Hofbräu

Karolinenstraße 7, 96049 Bamberg · Website

We'd planned on Schlenkerla for dinner, and showed up on a Sunday with no reservation. They had nothing for us. We kept walking and ended up here instead, and it turned out to be a good backup. Seating is communal, long shared tables, and one other family joined ours partway through the meal, everyone saying hello and goodbye like old friends by the end of it. Dinner was excellent, veal wiener schnitzel with lingonberries and a potato-cucumber salad I'm still thinking about.

Schlenkerla Biergarten

Dominikanerstraße 6, 96049 Bamberg (Dominikanerhof courtyard) · Website

The main tavern turned us away, but Schlenkerla runs a separate beer garden tucked into the old Dominican monastery courtyard next door, open since 2007 for exactly the kind of night we were having. I got my Rauchbier here, made by drying the malt over an open wood fire, which gives it an actual smoky flavor, somewhere between a Guinness and beef jerky in the best way. One glass is plenty.

Where We’d Eat Next in Bamberg

We haven't eaten at these restaurants ourselves yet, but these are the places that kept coming up in our research and the ones we'd try on our next visit.

Zum Sternla

Lange Str. 46, 96047 Bamberg · Website

A Bamberg institution with a mostly local crowd and a welcoming feel. This is the one that came up most often when we asked about authentic Franconian food away from the more touristy spots, and it's high on our list for next time.

Eckerts Wirtshaus und Esszimmer

Obere Mühlbrücke 9, 96049 Bamberg · Website

Known for one of the best river views in town, which is saying something in a city built around water. A local favorite for a proper sit-down meal with a view of the Regnitz.

Klosterbräu

Obere Mühlbrücke 1-3, 96049 Bamberg · Website

Bamberg's oldest brewery, pouring home-brewed ale alongside Franconian dishes, with brewery tours available if you want to understand the beer before you drink it. A strong pick if Schlenkerla is full or you want a second brewery to compare it against.

Brauerei Spezial

Obere Königstraße 10, 96052 Bamberg · Website

Another of Bamberg's Rauchbier producers, with a menu that's reportedly only in German, which we're taking as a good sign rather than a problem. Staff are said to speak English. If Schlenkerla is packed, this is the backup other travelers point to most often.

Practical Tips for Eating in Bamberg

How many dinners do you need in Bamberg? One night gets you one real dinner and one brewery, which is roughly what we managed. Two nights would let you compare Schlenkerla against Klosterbräu or Brauerei Spezial without rushing.

Is Bamberg expensive to eat in? No. Beer and Franconian food here run reasonably priced even at the well-known spots, and a full dinner with drinks is not a splurge by German standards.

Do I really need a reservation at Schlenkerla? Yes, especially on weekends and Sundays. We found out the hard way that showing up without one can mean getting turned away entirely, even though their beer garden next door is sometimes a workable backup.

What should I actually order? Rauchbier if you're going to try Bamberg's signature style, and plan on one glass rather than several, it's rich and smoky, closer to a meal in a glass than a session beer. Veal wiener schnitzel with lingonberries, if it's on the menu, is worth ordering too.

Where to stay for easy access to dinner? Staying anywhere in or close to the old town puts most of these within walking distance. See our Where to Stay in Bamberg guide for the full breakdown.

That's everything we know about eating and drinking in Bamberg, whether we sat down ourselves or built a strong enough case from research to put it on the list for next time. We'll keep updating this as we make it back.
