Where to Stay in Rotterdam: Best Hotels & Neighborhoods.

Yellow Cube Houses in Rotterdam, Netherlands

We lived in Rotterdam for four years, so most of our hotel experience here isn't from trip planning, it's from putting up visiting family and friends and figuring out, firsthand, which parts of the city actually make sense to sleep in. Rotterdam doesn't have one obvious hotel neighborhood the way Amsterdam does. This guide covers the areas that work, the hotels we've personally stayed in, and where to look beyond that.

Where We've Actually Stayed

Between our own stays and hosting visitors, we've slept at four very different Rotterdam hotels: the NH Atlanta on Coolsingel, right in the center; the Postillion Hotel & Convention Centre WTC, a business-focused stay in a former grain exchange building; Hotel New York, the city's most iconic hotel by a wide margin; and the ss Rotterdam, a retired ocean liner permanently docked on the river that you can actually sleep on.

Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Rotterdam

Rotterdam doesn't have one obvious hotel district. Where you base yourself changes the trip more than it does in a lot of European cities.

City Center

Around Coolsingel, Lijnbaan and the Markthal, this is the most walkable option and puts you close to nearly everything in our Rotterdam travel guide. It's also the busiest and most built-up part of the city.

Best for: First-time visitors who want to walk to most landmarks.

Kop van Zuid

Across the Erasmus Bridge from the center, this is Rotterdam's modern, design-forward side, home to Hotel New York and some of the newer skyline hotels. It's a short walk or one tram stop from downtown.

Best for: Skyline views and a quieter, more upscale base.

Katendrecht

Just past Kop van Zuid, this used to be Rotterdam's rough dockworkers' quarter and is now one of the city's most interesting neighborhoods, home to Fenix Food Factory and the Fenix migration museum. Fewer hotels here, but worth knowing about if you want to stay somewhere that feels local.

Best for: Travelers who want to be near Fenix and away from the main tourist areaa.

Best Unique and Historic Hotels in Rotterdam

Rotterdam doesn't have a lot of old buildings left, so the ones that survived tend to make unusually memorable hotels.

ss Rotterdam hotel ship illuminated at night in Rotterdam
  1. ss Rotterdam ($$): A retired transatlantic ocean liner, permanently docked on the river and converted into a 254-room hotel with period fifties-style decor across six room types. We've stayed here. It's genuinely unlike any other hotel in the city, restaurants, a wine bar and a grand ballroom all on board. Book this one for the novelty as much as the room.
  2. Hotel New York ($$$): The former Holland America Line headquarters in Kop van Zuid, built in 1901 and a national heritage site since 2000. This was where more than a million European emigrants boarded ships to New York, and the building still carries that history. We've stayed here and it's the one hotel in Rotterdam we'd call a must-do at least once. Also great place for drinks.

Best Business and Central Hotels in Rotterdam

If you want to be in the middle of everything, or you're in town for meetings rather than sightseeing, these are the two we know firsthand.

Lobby and grand staircase at NH Atlanta Rotterdam
  1. NH Atlanta Rotterdam ($$): One of the few remaining monumental buildings in the city center, Art Deco details, marble floors, right between Coolsingel and Lijnbaan. We've stayed here during a heat wave and it's about as central as Rotterdam gets, an easy walk to the Markthal and Cube Houses.
  2. Postillion Hotel & Convention Centre WTC ($$): Housed in a former grain exchange building, one of the few structures that survived the WWII bombing, now paired with a large conference center. Dylan and I stayed here when we were doing school visits. I like this hotel. i recommend this when peopls ask. It is centrally located just off Coolsingel.

Best Luxury Hotels in Rotterdam

We haven't personally stayed at any of these yet, but they come up consistently as Rotterdam's top luxury picks.

Guest room at Haven Hotel Rotterdam with city views
  1. Rotterdam Marriott Hotel ($$$): 228 rooms near Witte de Withstraat, putting you in the middle of the city's bar and restaurant street.
  2. Haven Hotel Rotterdam, Curio Collection by Hilton ($$$): At the foot of the Erasmus Bridge with views over Leuvehaven and the skyline, a lifestyle and wellness focused property.
  3. Hilton Rotterdam ($$): Right in the city center, close to the zoo and with a choice of Indonesian, French and seafood restaurants on site.

Best Boutique and Design Hotels in Rotterdam

Also unvisited by us so far, but well reviewed and a good fit for a city this design-obsessed.

Hotel room at nhow Rotterdam with views of the Erasmus Bridge
  1. nhow Rotterdam ($$$): Inside De Rotterdam, the building on Wilhelmina Pier, with river and skyline views. This is also where Gastrobar Elvy is, our pick for the best drinks spot in the city in our Where to Eat in Rotterdam guide.
  2. Morgan & Mees ($$): A 1938 Bauhaus building with original tiles and woodwork mixed with contemporary design and art.
  3. Suitehotel Pincoffs ($$): Near Kop van Zuid and Hotel New York, a smaller, design-focused property.

Booking Tips for Rotterdam

Decide on a neighborhood before you decide on a hotel. Rotterdam's sights are more spread out than Amsterdam's, so where you sleep changes how much walking your trip involves.

Book Hotel New York and the ss Rotterdam early if either is on your list. Both are novelty stays with a limited number of rooms, and they sell out faster than a standard hotel with the same star rating.

Don't assume Kop van Zuid is walkable to everything. It feels close on a map, but you're crossing the Erasmus Bridge or taking the metro to reach the Markthal and Cube Houses side of the city.

Check what's included at the WTC-area hotels. Business hotels like the Postillion sometimes price breakfast and parking separately in a way leisure-focused hotels don't.

FAQ About Hotels in Rotterdam

Is it better to stay in Rotterdam city center or Kop van Zuid? City center if you want to walk everywhere. Kop van Zuid if you want quieter streets, skyline views, and don't mind a short bridge crossing or metro ride into the center.

Can you actually sleep on the ss Rotterdam? Yes, it's a fully operating hotel with 254 rooms aboard a retired ocean liner permanently docked on the river.

Is Hotel New York worth the price? We think so. It's the most historically significant hotel in the city, the former Holland America Line headquarters, and the atmosphere is hard to replicate anywhere else in Rotterdam.

How far in advance should you book? A few weeks out for most hotels, earlier for Hotel New York or the ss Rotterdam if you want a specific room type.

Is Rotterdam cheaper than Amsterdam for hotels? Generally yes, Rotterdam hotel prices tend to run lower than Amsterdam for a comparable star rating.

Our Rotterdam Hotel Takeaway

If you want a straightforward, central base, the NH Atlanta or something similar in the city center will do the job. If you want the trip to include one memorable night, book Hotel New York or the ss Rotterdam and build the evening around it. Traveling on a budget, Stayokay's location inside the Cube Houses is hard to beat for the novelty alone.
