Where to Stay in Bamberg: Best Hotels in the Old Town & Beyond

Historic buildings and church towers in Bamberg, Germany

Bamberg's entire old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which makes it one of those rare places where almost any hotel inside the historic center puts you close to everything. The choice really comes down to whether you want to be right on the river in a historic building or a short walk away for a lot less money. We stayed on the value side and were glad we did.

We usually skip Ibis properties in favor of four-star chains, but everything else in town was priced high for what it was, so we tried the ibis Styles Bamberg and were glad we did. It felt more like a four-star property than a standard Ibis, and at around 95 euros a night, it was one of the better values of the whole trip. The location is the real selling point: a five-minute walk into the old town, on a street lined with bakeries and restaurants, and about two blocks from a huge riverside park where people were white-water rafting, biking and having picnics. It also has a gym, which we used and liked.

Your Guide to Staying in Bamberg

Bamberg's old town wraps around the Regnitz River, with the Altes Rathaus, the old town hall, sitting on its own island in the middle of it. Bamberg Cathedral and the Neue Residenz sit up on the hill on the west side, and Little Venice, the old fishing quarter, runs along the riverbank. Almost everything worth seeing is within a fifteen-minute walk of the Altes Rathaus, which is part of why staying anywhere in or near the old town works well here.

The river splits the town's character. Staying right on the water in a historic building, like Hotel Nepomuk or Villa Geyersworth, puts you in the most photogenic part of Bamberg but usually costs more. Staying a few streets back or just outside the immediate old town, like we did, gets you the same walkability to everything with a noticeably lower price tag.

Best Old Town Hotels in Bamberg

We didn't stay in one of these ourselves, but these are the hotels we'd look at first if being inside the historic core, on the water if possible, is the priority.

  1. Hotel Nepomuk ($$$): Sits right on the water in the old town, with light, modern rooms and clean lines that feel like a break from the half-timbered buildings around it. It's within a ten-minute walk of both the cathedral and the Altes Rathaus. The pick if you want a contemporary hotel experience inside a historic setting.
  2. Weinhaus Messerschmitt ($$): A four-star hotel with a traditional restaurant on site specializing in local game and fresh fish from the Main. Comfortable, classic rooms and a central location. A good pick if you want a real Franconian dinner without leaving the building.
  3. Altstadthotel Messerschmitt ($$): A family-run hotel in the old quarter, about six minutes on foot from the cathedral. Smaller and more personal than the bigger properties on this list, which suits travelers who prefer a family-run feel over a chain.
  4. Villa Geyersworth ($$$): Set on Geyersworth Island on the old Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal, this is the most elegant option in town, with spacious rooms and a restaurant with parquet floors. The pick if you want to splurge on the setting as much as the room.

Best Value and Family Hotels in Bamberg

If price or space matters more than being directly on the water, these are the picks we'd point you to.

  1. ibis Styles Bamberg ($$): This is where we stayed, and it felt more like a four-star property than a standard Ibis. About a five-minute walk into the old town, on a street lined with bakeries and restaurants, with a big riverside park two blocks away that made walking Rex easy. It also has a gym, which we used. At around 95 euros a night, it was one of the better values of the entire trip.
  2. Hotel Wohnbar ($$): Standard rooms or larger apartment-style suites with eclectic, light interiors, a good fit for families who want more space than a typical hotel room without paying for a full luxury stay.

What to Know Before You Book in Bamberg

Bamberg fills up fast on weekends, especially in summer and around the Christmas markets, and popular restaurants like Schlenkerla can turn walk-ins away entirely without a reservation, so book both your hotel and dinner plans ahead if your dates are set.

The old town is flat and walkable along the river, but the walk up to Bamberg Cathedral and the hill above it is steep, and the Altenburg Castle hike above town is steeper still. Wear real shoes no matter where you stay, since cobblestones are everywhere.

Bamberg is an easy town for dogs. The riverside park near the ibis Styles is enormous and shaded, and most old town streets are calm enough for walking a dog even in the evening. Confirm pet policies directly before booking, since they vary by hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions About Where to Stay in Bamberg

What is the best area to stay in Bamberg?

Anywhere in or within easy walking distance of the old town works well, since Bamberg is small enough that almost every hotel puts you close to the Altes Rathaus, the cathedral and Little Venice. Staying directly on the river costs more, staying a few streets back or just outside the core saves money without losing much walkability.

Is Bamberg worth visiting?

Yes, and out of the towns we covered in Franconia, it's the one we'd send you to first. It has an intact UNESCO old town, a genuine brewery culture and a castle hike with a view over the whole city, all within one night's stay.

How many nights do you need in Bamberg?

One night is enough to walk the old town, cross both bridges at sunset and hike up to Altenburg Castle the next morning, which is roughly what we did. Two nights gives you room to try more than one brewery without rushing.

Is Bamberg expensive?

Reasonably priced for the region. Hotel prices here are similar to or slightly lower than in Wรผrzburg.

When is the best time to visit Bamberg?

Late spring through early fall for beer gardens and riverside seating, or December if you want to combine it with Christmas markets. See our full guide to the best time to visit Bamberg for more detail.

Our Bamberg Hotel Takeaway

Bamberg rewards staying anywhere close to the old town, which is part of what makes it such an easy base for a short stop. The river hotels give you the most photogenic version of the stay, but the value options just a few minutes further out get you the same walkability for noticeably less money, which is exactly what we found.

If you want to splurge, Hotel Nepomuk or Villa Geyersworth put you right on the water. If you'd rather spend that money on dinner and a Rauchbier or two, ibis Styles Bamberg gets you nearly the same walk into town for a fraction of the price. Book ahead either way, especially around weekends and the holidays.
