One Day in Bamberg: Our Perfect 24-Hour Itinerary
We'd wanted to visit Bamberg for years, but every time we checked hotel prices, they were high enough that we ended up going somewhere else. On our drive home from Croatia, we finally made it work, stopping in Bamberg after Graz before continuing home. We only had one night and the following morning, but it was enough to see why we'd been trying to get here for so long.

Afternoon: Check In and Walk the Old Town
We checked into the ibis Styles Bamberg, a five-minute walk from the old town, and headed straight in. Bamberg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it's the kind of old town where you can just walk without a plan for an hour and still hit most of the highlights: cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, the Altes Rathaus built on its own island in the Regnitz River.
Late Afternoon: Little Venice and the Cathedral
From the Rathaus it's a short walk to Little Venice, a stretch of former fishermen's houses along the river that's mostly just worth looking at rather than doing anything in. From there we made our way up toward Bamberg Cathedral on the hill, four spires visible from most of the riverside walks below, and the Neue Residenz and rose garden right next to it.
Evening: Dinner and a Detour to a Brewery
We'd planned on Schlenkerla for dinner, the famous Rauchbier brewery that's been pouring smoked beer out of a building dating to 1405. We showed up on a Sunday with no reservation and they had nothing for us, so we kept walking and found a spot at Hofbräu instead, communal seating, a family sharing our table like old friends by the end of the meal. Dinner was veal schnitzel with lingonberries, worth it even as a backup plan.
I still got my Rauchbier that night, at Schlenkerla's beer garden tucked into the old Dominican monastery courtyard next to the main tavern, a separate seating area for exactly nights like ours.
Sunset: Loop Both Bridges
Before or after dinner, walk both bridges over the Regnitz at sunset. This was our favorite time to see Bamberg, with the Altes Rathaus lit up and Little Venice glowing along the river. We crossed with Dylan, got a glass of wine, and just stood there watching the river along with everyone else.
Morning: Hike Altenburg Castle
We left Dylan asleep at the hotel and drove about ten minutes, straight uphill, to Altenburg Castle before checkout. The hike is steep but short, and it ends with a proper view over the entire city. On the way down we pulled over so I could get a photo, which meant walking through an active vineyard to get the shot, and we cleared out just ahead of a school group arriving.
Before You Leave: Christmas Shops and Cookies
We hit a couple of bakeries and two year-round Christmas shops on our way out of town, picking up black and white cookies neither of us had seen sold outside Los Angeles before. Small, easy to pack, worth the ten-minute detour if it's on your way.
Our Tip
Book Schlenkerla ahead if smoked beer is the whole reason you're coming, or plan a backup like we did. Either way, save time to loop both bridges at sunset.
