One Day in Rotterdam: How We'd Spend It as Locals
We were asked this exact question on our own podcast: if someone only had one day in Rotterdam, where would we take them? All three of us gave different answers, which tells you something about the city. It's not a one-landmark-checklist kind of place. But if I had to build one actual day out of it, here's the version I'd give a friend standing at Centraal Station with eight hours to work with.

Morning: Markthal and the Cube Houses
Start at Markthal. Go early enough to beat the worst of the crowd, grab coffee and something from one of the cheese stands, and look up at the ceiling before you do anything else, it's the kind of thing you forget to do once the hall fills up. If your day happens to land on a Tuesday or Saturday, the open-air market right outside is one of the biggest in Europe and worth a slow lap even if you're not buying anything.
Step outside and you're already at the Cube Houses. One of them is open to visitors if you want to see the inside, otherwise ten minutes of photos and a walk underneath is enough.
Late Morning: The Old Harbor
Walk down to De Oude Haven. Historic boats, the Witte Huis at the edge, cafés that are just opening up for the day. This is also where Lisa would start her version of this day: she'd take the water taxi from Katendrecht straight across to the Old Harbor and have mussels for lunch right here instead of continuing on. If that sounds better to you than what's next, follow her lead instead, you won't go wrong either way.
Midday: Lunch at Bergweg Station
This is my actual answer from the podcast, and I'm sticking with it. Bergweg Station is a former train station turned food hall, smaller and calmer than Markthal, with what we think is the best pizza in Rotterdam and a cheesecake stand worth saving room for. Dylan orders the ramen every single time.
Afternoon: Fenix Museum
Take the metro or a water taxi over to Katendrecht for Fenix, the migration museum that opened in 2025. Walk the spiral staircase up to the rooftop for the view, then go through the Suitcase Labyrinth, more than two thousand donated suitcases, some with audio guides that tell the owner's story in their own words. It's not a quick museum to rush through. Budget at least an hour.
Meghan's version of this day skips Fenix for the Witte Huis's bar and a panzerotti stop instead, so if museums aren't your thing, that's a fair swap.
Late Afternoon: Erasmus Bridge
Walk back toward the center across the Erasmus Bridge. Late afternoon light on the water is worth timing for if you can.
Evening: Witte de Withstraat and Dinner
End the day the way we actually end most of ours: a drink on Witte de Withstraat, then dinner at Foodhallen if nobody in your group can agree on what to eat. It gets busy and a little loud after dark, which is most of the appeal. Read more about where we would eat in our Where to Eat in Rotterdam guide.
Our Tip
Don't try to fit in a big group harbor cruise on top of all this, you won't have time and it's not worth rushing the rest of the day for. If you want the water view, the walk across the Erasmus Bridge already gives you most of it for free.
What We'd Add With More Time
With a second day, add the Euromast for the view and Delfshaven for the quieter, older side of the city that this itinerary doesn't touch. With a car, Kinderdijk's windmills are close enough to fold into a second day too, either driving or taking a water taxi out.
