Vienna

In Vienna, music is everywhere.  I think that is what struck me the most about Vienna; the connection to music.  So many amazing musicial history and figures came from this city.  It is everywhere in the streets but my favorite thing was indoors.  The House of Music was fantastic.  It was so interactive and interesting and fun.  There is a staircase where the steps are piano keys and a place where you can “conduct” an orchestra.  It is fantastic for all ages.  I highly recommend it.  Next trip, I would love to see a concert at St. Anne’s.

We spent hours wandering around Schonbrunn Palace and the gardens.  Even in the dead of winter, the gardens are stunning.  Kids will love running around there.

St Stephen’s cathedral certainly deserves a look.  The inside and out are equally stunning and photo worthy.

There are so many different areas of Vienna that it is fascinating just to wander around and explore.  While we were doing that one day, we found Naschmarkt.  This is an enormous open air food market that has I think everything you could imagine.  We found vinegar heaven there.  It was a stand that had every type of vinegar you could dream up.  They let you taste them as well.  Really cool spot.  There are plenty of places to buy groceries or you can get ready to eat as well.

The food is hearty in Vienna with lots of meats, and breads and an array or beers and spirits.  After you have had your fill of beer and sausage, you must try a sacher cake.  There is even a historical café in Hotel Sacher if you want to be authentic.  Sacher is a chocolate sponge cake with a jammy fruit layer in the middle. People love it.  Give it a try. Don’t skip the Mozart Balls.

Because we were there at Christmas time we spent a lot of our time at markets etc.  So, in addition to a concert at St Anne’s, I would love to hit more museums, especially the Sigmond Freud museum.

We stayed at the Imperial Riding School which was great and dog friendly.  There were plenty of green areas to walk with the dog and they had a great afternoon snack time.  You can see other hotels we were looking at here.
