Where to Stay in Prague:

From baroque monastery conversions in Malá Strana to design hotels near Charles Bridge, these are our Prague picks.

Prague is a fairy tale city and the hotels reflect that. You can sleep in a 13th-century monastery where monks still live, stay in a baroque palace with Indonesian spa treatments in ancient cellars or book a riverside room with views of Charles Bridge at dawn. The hotel decision in Prague is not just about location or price. It is about choosing which piece of Prague's history you want to inhabit during your stay.

We have stayed at the Augustine, the Hilton Prague Atrium and the Golden Well, each in a completely different part of the city and each a completely different experience. The Augustine set a standard for what a historic hotel conversion can be. The Golden Well's rooftop restaurant is one of the finest meals we have had anywhere in Europe. Now after more research we have our eyes on the Alchymist Grand Hotel and CORU House for future trips. This guide reflects what we have learned about Prague hotels through our stays and research and what we would book based on the type of trip we were planning.

We have an episode on Prague if you want to hear more about where we stayed and what we loved about the city.

Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Prague:

Old Town (Staré Město). The heart of tourist Prague with the Astronomical Clock, Old Town Square and dense cobblestone streets. Every major sight is walkable. Hotels here put you in the center of everything but you pay for that proximity.
Lesser Town (Malá Strana). The baroque district between the river and Prague Castle. Quieter than Old Town, more romantic with hidden gardens and palace facades. This is where most of the luxury monastery and palace conversions are located. Walking distance to Charles Bridge and the Castle.
Castle District (Hradčany). The hilltop area around Prague Castle. Fewer hotels but the ones that exist offer castle views and proximity to St. Vitus Cathedral. Quieter and more residential. A steep walk or tram ride down to the river.
Vinohrady and New Town. Residential neighborhoods with local restaurants and lower hotel prices. You sacrifice immediate proximity to the sights but gain a more authentic Prague experience and better value. Good metro connections.

Historic Conversions: Monastery and Palace Hotels in Prague

For travelers who want to sleep inside actual pieces of Prague's history.

Augustine, A Luxury Collection Hotel

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Location: Malá Strana, former 13th-century Augustinian monastery

Why Stay Here: We have stayed here and the Augustine is unlike any hotel we have experienced. It is a monastery conversion where four monks still live on the property. The Augustine is built from seven historic buildings including the Augustinian monastery and St. Thomas's Brewery. You can tour the monastery and 13th-century library without leaving the hotel. The rooms were assembled from monks' cells and the design mixes Czech modernist furniture with 1920s Czechoslovakian art. The Refectory Bar is in the former eating hall with restored baroque frescoes and the brewery cellar serves St. Thomas beer brewed to the original recipe. The monastery tour and the beer cellar alone are worth the visit. This is not a hotel that happens to be in a historic building. This is a functioning piece of Prague's monastic history that has been converted into luxury accommodation while keeping the spiritual atmosphere intact.

Alchymist Grand Hotel And Spa

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Location: Malá Strana, housed in four 16th-century bourgeois houses

Why Stay Here: This is at the top of our list for the next Prague trip and the Ecsotica Spa in the cellars is the main reason. A baroque palace hotel with opulent interiors that feel like stepping into a Venetian fantasy: Murano chandeliers, hand-painted ceilings, silk drapes and gold flourishes throughout. The spa is in the ancient cellars with Indonesian-inspired treatments, a pool under crystal chandeliers and Balinese masseuses. The San Carlo restaurant serves modern Italian cuisine in a palatial dining room. You are steps from Prague Castle and Charles Bridge. This is maximum luxury with no restraint. If you want to feel like royalty in a baroque setting, this delivers without apology.

Price Range: $$$$$+ per night

Mandarin Oriental Prague

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Location: Malá Strana, former 14th-century Dominican monastery

Why Stay Here: Another monastery conversion but with Mandarin Oriental's signature zen-minimalist aesthetic layered over the Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture. The spa is in the Romanesque vaults beneath the monastery and offers a spiritual wellness experience that matches the setting. The rooms feature vaulted ceilings and arched doorways with contemporary furnishings and modern art. Spices restaurant serves elevated Asian cuisine. The location is quiet, tucked into Malá Strana but a short walk to Charles Bridge. If you want monastery history with Mandarin Oriental refinement and a world-class spa, this is the answer.

Golden Well Hotel

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Location: Castle District, below Prague Castle, former residence of Emperor Rudolf II

Why Stay Here: We have stayed here and the location below the castle is as extraordinary as it sounds. A 19-room boutique hotel in a Renaissance building that once belonged to Emperor Rudolf II and later housed the astronomer Tycho Brahe. You reach it by walking up cobblestone streets to the base of Prague Castle walls. The Terasa U Zlaté studně rooftop restaurant has panoramic city views and holds a spot among the best restaurants in the Czech Republic. The rooms have beamed ceilings, period furnishings and views over Prague's rooftops or the Royal Gardens. This is intimate, romantic and secluded while being right next to the Castle. This is not luxury but it is excellent value for clean, contemporary apartments in a genuinely good neighborhood. FAQ About Hotels in Prague

What is the best area to stay in Prague for first-time visitors?

Old Town gives you the most central base with everything walkable: the Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge and Old Town Square are all within a few minutes on foot. Malá Strana is our preference for a more romantic and quieter stay with the monastery and palace hotels and easy access to the Castle. For first-timers who want to walk everywhere and be surrounded by Prague's history, Old Town or Malá Strana are the straightforward choices.

Is Prague expensive for hotels?

Prague sits at the lower end of major European capital hotel prices, which is part of why it rewards staying well. The luxury tier, the monastery conversions and riverside properties, costs significantly less than equivalent properties in Paris, London or Amsterdam. The mid-range and value options are genuinely good for the quality. Prices rise sharply during major events and peak summer weekends so booking ahead makes a real difference.

Do you need a car in Prague?

No. Prague's historic center is compact and best explored on foot. The tram network is excellent and covers the center comprehensively. The metro connects you quickly to neighborhoods further out. Driving in Old Town and Malá Strana is actively restricted and parking in the center is expensive and scarce. If you are arriving by car, hotels like Hotel Caesar and Hotel Leon D'Oro offer private parking, which is worth factoring in.

When is the best time to visit Prague?

May and June for the best combination of warm weather, long evenings and manageable crowds. September and October for beautiful autumn light and quieter streets than summer. July and August are the busiest months with peak prices and the largest tour groups at the main sights. December brings Christmas markets around Old Town Square and a genuinely magical atmosphere despite the cold. January and February are the quietest and cheapest months.

Is Malá Strana or Old Town better for hotels?

They offer different versions of Prague. Old Town is denser, busier and more central with easier access to restaurants, shops and transport. Malá Strana is quieter, more romantic and home to most of the monastery and palace conversions. If you want to feel like you are inside Prague's history and don't mind a short walk or tram ride to Old Town, Malá Strana is the better base. If you want everything immediately walkable and don't need the baroque atmosphere, Old Town wins.

What is the best luxury hotel in Prague?

The Augustine for the monastery conversion experience and the most distinctly Prague luxury stay. The Mandarin Oriental for refinement, the Romanesque vault spa and Malá Strana quiet. The Four Seasons for the Charles Bridge view and grand hotel service. Each delivers a different version of Prague luxury and all three are genuinely exceptional. The Golden Well, technically a four-star, belongs in this conversation for its location and rooftop restaurant alone.
