Lithuania Travel Guide

Our first trip to Lithuania was a long weekend in Vilnius in October, staying right in Old Town and seeing the city almost entirely on foot. This section covers what we actually did there, and we’ll keep adding to it as we explore more of the country and the rest of the Baltics.

Start with our Vilnius Travel Guide, then use the walking tour, hotel, food and seasonal guides below to plan the details.

Vilnius was our base for this trip, and it’s an easy first stop in the Baltics. The Old Town is small enough to cross on foot in about half an hour, it’s rarely crowded, and it’s full of history and art you’d walk right past without a guide. Start with our Vilnius travel guide →

Know Before You Go: Lithuania

Best Time to Visit:
We went in October, when it was cold and windy but quiet, with fall color in the parks. See our Best Time to Visit Vilnius guide for the full seasonal breakdown.

Getting Around:
Vilnius Old Town is easy to walk, and we never needed public transport inside the city. From the airport, a Bolt ride to Old Town cost us about €7 to €9.

Currency:
Euro (EUR). Cards are widely accepted.

Language:
Lithuanian. Public signs are in English too, but English among shop and restaurant staff can be limited, so a translation app helps.

Tipping Culture:
Tipping isn’t required, but rounding up or leaving around 10% for good service in restaurants is appreciated.

Travel Tip:
Book a walking tour for your first morning and save the church interiors for the afternoon. A lot of the churches we wanted to see didn’t open until around 1:00.
