Where to Eat in Würzburg: From a Sunday Night Backup Plan to the Splurge
We only had one dinner in Würzburg, so this isn't a list of everywhere we ate. It's the honest version: where we actually sat down, and the Franconian restaurants that came up again and again while we were researching the town, the ones we'd try first next time.
Where We Actually Ate
Wirtshaus am Dom
Paradeplatz 4, 97070 Würzburg · Website
We got into town on a Sunday with no dinner reservation, which in Germany can be a problem, and Lisa was calling around from the car trying to find anywhere with a table. We ended up at Wirsthaus am Dom, right near the cathedral, mostly by default since it was one of the few places with room. It turned out to be a good default: cute, lively, right in the center of things.
I had my first wiener schnitzel of the trip there, and it was everything I was hoping for. The food overall was solid and the service was great
Where We’d Eat Next in Würzburg
We haven't eaten at these restaurants ourselves yet, but these are the places that kept coming up in our research and the ones we'd try on our next visit.
Bürgerspital Weinstuben
Theaterstraße 19, 97070 Würzburg · Website
This is the one we'd book first on a return trip. A historic wine tavern connected to Bürgerspital, one of Würzburg's oldest wine estates, with cellar tours and tastings in the vaults beneath the building. If you want Franconian wine and food in the same sitting, this keeps coming up as the place to do it properly.
Backöfele
Ursulinergasse 2, 97070 Würzburg · Website
A traditional restaurant that's been around for about 35 years, serving hearty, rustic Franconian cooking in a room full of wooden furniture. It's the kind of place that shows up on nearly every local recommendation list for Würzburg, and the consistency of that is what put it on ours.
Alte Mainmühle
Mainkai 1, 97070 Würzburg · Website
An old mill on the river with views toward Marienberg Fortress, pouring local beer and Franconian wine alongside seasonal, rustic food. If we'd had a second evening, this is where we'd have wanted to be for sunset.
Aifach Reisers
Marktgasse 2, 97070 Würzburg · Website
The newer spot from the same chef behind Reisers am Stein, which has since closed. This one sits right on the old market square instead of the vineyard hill outside town, with a casual, seasonal menu by day and a more ambitious à la carte or surprise menu at night. Worth trying if you want a proper sit-down dinner from a chef with a strong reputation, without leaving the old town to get it.
Kuno 1408
Neubaustraße 7, 97070 Würzburg · Website
A modern take on Franconian cooking with high-quality, seasonal ingredients and an elegant room. It's actually inside the Best Western Premier Hotel Rebstock, the same hotel on our Where to Stay in Würzburg list. This is the splurge pick if you want a proper night out rather than a casual dinner.
Practical Tips for Eating in Würzburg
How many dinners do you need in Würzburg? One evening is enough to get a real dinner and a glass of wine in Würzburg, which is roughly what we had. Two evenings would let you actually book one of the researched picks above instead of relying on a walk-in.
Is Würzburg expensive to eat in? No, noticeably less expensive than Munich or Salzburg. Wine by the glass at wine gardens and stands runs cheap, and a full sit-down dinner is reasonable by German city standards.
Do restaurants take reservations seriously on Sundays? Yes, and we learned this the hard way. Many restaurants have limited hours or are closed entirely on Sundays, so book ahead if your visit lands on one, or have a backup plan in mind the way we did.
What should I actually order? Franconian wine, ideally a Silvaner in a Bocksbeutel, and a wiener schnitzel if you want to try it, though ask whether it's veal or pork before you order if that distinction matters to you.
Where to stay for easy access to dinner? Staying inside the old town puts most of these restaurants within a short walk. We stayed just outside the center and it added a short drive to every dinner plan, worth knowing before you book. See our Where to Stay in Würzburg guide for the full breakdown.
That's everything we know about eating in Würzburg, whether we sat down ourselves or built a strong enough case from research to put it on the list for next time. We'll keep updating this as we make it back.
