The Best Hotels in Berlin: Best Hotels by Neighborhood and Budget

Our Tried and Tested Picks From Mitte to Kreuzberg

Berlin is one of those cities that gets under your skin and stays there. We have been twice and come back each time feeling like we barely scratched the surface. The food scene, the history, the nightlife, the sheer size of the place and the way it refuses to take itself too seriously. Getting your hotel base right matters here because Berlin is enormous and the neighbourhoods feel genuinely different from each other.

We have stayed at New York New York, centrally located near the Tiergarten with some of the best-sized rooms and breakfasts we have had in the city, and at MOA Berlin in Moabit, a little further from the main action but a properly good hotel with excellent rooms, a great breakfast and a shopping centre directly underneath. Both gave us completely different versions of the city.

Here are the best hotels in Berlin across every budget and neighbourhood, based on our stays and research.

Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Berlin:

Mitte. Berlin’s historic centre. Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, the Gendarmenmarkt and the best concentration of sights in the city. The obvious choice for a first visit and the easiest base for getting your bearings.

Charlottenburg. West Berlin’s elegant old centre. The Kurfürstendamm shopping boulevard, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and a more traditional, polished feel than the east of the city. Good transport links and some of Berlin’s best classic hotels.

Prenzlauer Berg. One of Berlin’s most liveable neighborhoods. Tree-lined streets, excellent independent coffee shops, good restaurants and a relaxed pace that makes it a great base if you want to feel like a local rather than a tourist.

Kreuzberg and Neukölln. The beating heart of alternative Berlin. Street food markets, independent bars, multicultural energy and some of the best eating in the city. Not the quietest option but the most alive, especially at night.

Friedrichshain. East Berlin’s creative and nightlife hub. The East Side Gallery, Boxhagener Platz and the club scene that put Berlin on the map. Best if you are coming for the music and the culture rather than the museums.

Moabit and Tiergarten. Less tourist-heavy than Mitte but well connected and close to the Tiergarten park and Hauptbahnhof. Good value compared to central alternatives and increasingly popular for travellers who want space and access without the central Berlin premium.

FAQ About Hotels in Berlin

What is the best area to stay in Berlin for first-time visitors?

Mitte is the easiest base for a first visit. You are close to the Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, the Gendarmenmarkt and the best concentration of sights in the city. Charlottenburg is a good alternative if you prefer a slightly quieter, more residential feel with equally good transport connections.

Is Berlin expensive for hotels?

Berlin is one of the most affordable major European capitals for hotel prices. You can find genuinely good rooms at every price point and even the luxury hotels tend to cost less than equivalent properties in London or Paris. Budget well and you will eat and drink very well on what you save.

Is it better to stay in East or West Berlin?

It depends on what you want from the trip. West Berlin (Charlottenburg, Tiergarten) is more polished and traditional, with the best classic luxury hotels. East Berlin (Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain) is where most of the creative energy, the best independent restaurants and the nightlife scene sit. For a first visit, Mitte splits the difference well.

When is the best time to visit Berlin?

May through September gives you the best weather and the outdoor bar and market scene that Berlin does better than almost anywhere. December is worth a visit for the Christmas markets. Berlin is a year-round destination but summer weekends book up quickly, particularly for good hotels at reasonable prices.

How far in advance should I book Berlin hotels?

For summer travel or major events like the Berlin Marathon, the ITB travel trade show or New Year’s Eve, book two to three months ahead. Outside of peak periods Berlin has good availability but the best-value rooms at quality hotels go quickly. Booking ahead always gives you the best rates.

What is the best hotel in Berlin for a special occasion?

Hotel Adlon Kempinski for the iconic location and the Brandenburg Gate on your doorstep. Das Stue for the design, the Michelin-starred restaurant and the Tiergarten setting. The Regent for quieter, more refined luxury on the Gendarmenmarkt. Each gives you a completely different version of what a special Berlin stay can feel like.
