We've stayed across Paris over the years, from iconic palace hotels like Plaza Athénée and Four Seasons Hotel George V to boutique favorites including Hôtel de Fleurie in Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Kimpton St Honoré near the Opéra. Choosing the right neighborhood has a bigger impact on your Paris trip than almost any other decision you'll make. Some areas put you within walking distance of the city's biggest attractions, while others offer quieter streets, better value or a more local feel. We've stayed in several different parts of Paris over the years, and each one has completely changed how we experienced the city.

The Golden Triangle (8th Arrondissement)

If you're visiting Paris for a special occasion or want the full luxury experience, the Golden Triangle is hard to beat. Centered around Avenue Montaigne, Avenue George V and the Champs-Élysées, this is home to some of the city's finest hotels, designer boutiques and Michelin-starred restaurants. We've stayed here ourselves, and despite its glamorous reputation, the area is surprisingly quiet once the daytime crowds disappear.

Louvre & Palais Royal (1st Arrondissement)

The 1st Arrondissement is one of the best choices for first-time visitors. We've stayed here ourselves and love how easy it is to spend an entire day exploring without ever feeling the need to leave the Left Bank.

Le Marais (3rd & 4th Arrondissements)

Le Marais is one of Paris's liveliest neighborhoods, filled with independent boutiques, galleries, excellent restaurants and historic streets that always seem full of life. It's one of our favorite places to wander because every block offers something different, whether that's a hidden courtyard, a local bakery or one of the city's best falafel shops.

Trocadéro (16th Arrondissement)

Hôtel de Fleurie ($$-$$$): We have stayed at Hôtel de Fleurie and it remains one of the most genuinely charming hotels we have found on the Left Bank. The family-run atmosphere feels real rather than staged, which matters in a neighborhood that can sometimes seem as though it is performing Paris for visitors. The cafés, bookshops, galleries and evening streets of Saint-Germain are immediately outside, while the rooms are warm, comfortable and carefully maintained. This is the kind of hotel we would return to because the entire stay felt right, not simply because the location was convenient.
Hôtel Le Six ($$$): Hôtel Le Six is a calm, well-designed hotel on a quiet street that works exceptionally well as a Left Bank base. The rooms have a contemporary feel that complements the neighborhood without competing with it, and the small spa is a welcome extra after a long day of walking. The Luxembourg Gardens and many of the best independent restaurants in the 6th are close by. This is a dependable choice for first-time visitors who want to be properly based on the Left Bank without paying the premium of the grand boulevard hotels.
Hôtel Le Walt ($$-$$$): Tucked into a residential pocket of the 7th near Les Invalides, Hôtel Le Walt offers a quieter version of central Paris. The rooms are well sized for the city, the service is attentive and the surrounding streets feel calm and lived-in rather than dominated by visitors. The hotel is large, comfortable and well run, with excellent transport connections from Gare Montparnasse that make it easy to reach almost any part of the city. The neighborhood also puts classic brasseries such as Le Select, La Rotonde and La Coupole within walking distance. This is our recommendation for travelers who want space, convenience and strong value without needing to stay in the middle of the tourist center.
Hôtel Brighton ($$$): Hôtel Brighton occupies one of the best-value positions in central Paris, directly across from the Tuileries on Rue de Rivoli. The Louvre, Palais Royal and Seine are all within walking distance, and some upper-floor rooms have views across the gardens. The interiors are traditionally styled and well maintained, but the location is the real reason to book. This is an excellent first-trip hotel for travelers who want the convenience of the 1st Arrondissement without paying the prices of the palace hotels across the street.
Hôtel Britannique ($-$$): Hôtel Britannique is a well-run three-star hotel in Châtelet with some of the strongest transport connections in Paris directly outside the door. It is best suited to travelers who plan to spend their days exploring Paris and would rather use their budget on food, museums and experiences than on a large hotel room. This is one of the most overlooked affordable stays in the 1st Arrondissement.

Booking Tips for Paris

Paris is one of Europe's most visited cities, and hotel prices vary dramatically depending on the season and major events. If you're visiting during spring, summer or the Christmas holidays, booking several months in advance will give you the best selection and rates.

Choose your neighborhood carefully. Paris is made up of 20 arrondissements, each with its own personality. We love Saint-Germain for its cafés and walkability, Le Marais for its energy and boutique shopping and the 7th Arrondissement for quieter streets near the Eiffel Tower.

Book early for spring and fall. April through June and September through October are some of the busiest times to visit Paris. Hotels in the most desirable neighborhoods often sell out well in advance.

Don't feel like you have to stay beside the Eiffel Tower. While it's iconic, many of our favorite neighborhoods are farther away and offer a more authentic Paris experience. Areas like Saint-Germain, Le Marais and the 1st Arrondissement are often better bases for exploring the city.

Stay near a Metro station. Paris has one of the best public transportation systems in Europe. A hotel within a short walk of a Metro station gives you easy access to every major attraction while allowing you to stay in neighborhoods that better fit your budget.

Breakfast isn't always included. Many Paris hotels charge extra for breakfast. Since the city is filled with wonderful bakeries and cafés, we often skip the hotel breakfast and grab a fresh croissant and coffee from a neighborhood boulangerie instead.
