We've stayed at Hotel Villa Flori on the Como shore and in Airbnbs in smaller villages around the lake, and the two gave us completely different trips. Villa Flori had the water views, the historic setting and easy access into Como. The apartments gave us more space, quieter mornings and the chance to experience the villages after most visitors had gone.

Since then we've been back several times, in October and again in the summer, driving the shoreline and taking the ferries. Those trips taught us that the most famous village isn't always the best base and that ferry access, parking and the time of year matter as much as the hotel itself.

Choosing where to stay on Lake Como has a bigger impact on your trip than many people expect. Some towns are lively and well connected by ferry, while others are quieter and better suited for a relaxing getaway. We've stayed in both hotels and apartments around the lake, and each area offers a completely different experience. These are the places we'd recommend most.

Como

Como is the largest town on the lake and the easiest base if you're arriving by train from Milan. It has the biggest selection of restaurants, shops and hotels, along with regular ferries that make exploring the rest of the lake simple.
Best for: First-time visitors, shorter trips and travelers without a car.

Bellagio

Bellagio sits where the three branches of Lake Como meet, making it one of the best locations for sightseeing. It's beautiful, walkable and has excellent ferry connections, but it's also one of the busiest places on the lake, especially in summer.
Best for: First-time visitors, luxury stays and postcard views.

Varenna

Varenna is one of our favorite villages on Lake Como. It's smaller and more relaxed than Bellagio but still has excellent ferry connections and plenty of lakeside restaurants. It strikes a great balance between convenience and atmosphere.
Best for: Couples, scenic views and a quieter stay.

Menaggio

Menaggio has a relaxed feel with a lovely waterfront promenade and easy ferry access to Bellagio and Varenna. Hotels here are often a little better value while still putting you close to the lake's biggest attractions.

Tremezzo & Cernobbio

If you're looking for elegant lakeside hotels and a slower pace, Tremezzo and Cernobbio are excellent choices. Both are home to some of Lake Como's most iconic hotels and beautiful waterfront villas, making them ideal if your hotel is just as much a part of the experience as the sightseeing.

These are the hotels that define Lake Como. If you've pictured grand villas, floating pools and terraces overlooking the lake, this is where you'll find them. They're expensive, but for a special trip, they're worth every euro.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo ($$$$-$$$$$): One of the most photographed hotels in Italy and it earns the attention. The Art Nouveau facade sits directly on the water in Tremezzo, there are three pools including one that floats on the lake itself, and the view across to Bellagio is the one you've seen a hundred times before you arrive. The gardens run down to the water and the ferry stops in front of the hotel, so the whole lake is reachable without a car. If you want every cliché about Lake Como delivered at the highest level, this is it.
Villa d'Este ($$$$$): The most famous hotel on the lake and the one everything else gets measured against. A 16th-century villa in Cernobbio with 25 acres of gardens, a floating pool on the lake and a guest list going back to the 1870s. It's formal in a way the newer properties aren't, which is either the appeal or the drawback depending on what you're after. Cernobbio is quiet and close to Como city, so the transport is easier than the location suggests.
Mandarin Oriental Lake Como ($$$$-$$$$$): The newest of the great Lake Como properties and the best designed. It occupies a 19th-century villa at Blevio on the Como shore with direct lake access, an excellent spa and a contemporary approach that works with the landscape instead of competing with it. The private dock and the boat excursions make the rest of the lake easy to reach. This is the pick if you want luxury that feels current rather than preserved.
Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni ($$$$): The grandest address in Bellagio and one of the oldest hotels on the lake, open since 1873 and sitting on the promontory where the two branches meet. That position means water views in two directions at once, which nowhere else on the lake can offer. The pool garden and lakeside terraces are the reason to book. The village is immediately outside and the ferry terminal is a short walk.
Il Sereno ($$$$-$$$$$): The most design-forward hotel on the lake, at Torno on the Como shore, with Patricia Urquiola interiors built around clean lines, natural materials and floor-to-ceiling water views from nearly every room. The rooftop bar faces the direction that catches the evening light. For travelers who'd rather have contemporary architecture than a historic grand hotel, this is the answer on Lake Como.

Best Lake View Hotels on Lake Como

The step below the grand hotels, and where most people should be looking. These all put you on the water with a terrace worth sitting on, at prices that make more than two nights realistic.

Hotel Villa Flori ($$$): We stayed here and the lake views are the reason to book. The moment we opened the curtains on our first morning, we knew we'd found the Lake Como we'd been imagining before the trip. Set in a beautifully restored 19th-century villa on the Como shore, the hotel is surrounded by terraced gardens that lead down to the water. Evenings on the terrace, watching the light change over the lake, became one of our favorite memories from our stay. Being just outside Como city also makes it easy to explore the rest of the lake while returning somewhere that feels quieter at the end of the day. If you're looking for a classic Lake Como experience without the price tag of the grand luxury hotels, Villa Flori is where we'd start.
Hotel du Lac Varenna ($$$): The most romantic position on the lake. The terrace extends out over the water, which is the table-on-the-lake setting in every Lake Como photograph ever taken. Varenna is one of the most beautiful villages on the eastern shore, quieter and more Italian than Bellagio, with ferry connections that reach the whole lake. The rooms are warm and well maintained. This is our answer every time someone asks where to stay for a romantic trip here.
Grand Hotel Victoria Menaggio ($$$): A restored 19th-century hotel in Menaggio with a pool, gardens and direct lake access. It manages to feel grand without the price that comes with the Cernobbio and Tremezzo properties. Menaggio is calmer and more residential than Bellagio while staying well connected by ferry. The restaurant and terrace are good for evenings. One of the best options on the western shore at a realistic rate.
Hotel Royal Victoria Varenna ($$$): A classic lakefront four-star in Varenna with a pool, terraced gardens and the water views that make this village one of the most photographed on the lake. Varenna is noticeably quieter than Bellagio and the Royal Victoria gives you that without cutting you off, since the ferry to Bellagio, Menaggio and Como runs from just outside. A strong choice for a less crowded version of Lake Como.
Barchetta Excelsior Como ($$$): The best lakefront address in Como city itself. It sits directly on the water with views across the lake and easy reach of the ferry terminal, the cathedral and the shopping streets. For travelers who want the town rather than the villages, and for anyone arriving by train from Milan, this is the most practical base on the list. The restaurant terrace over the water is one of the better dinner spots in the city.

Lake Como doesn't have to be a once-in-a-decade splurge. These hotels prove you can wake up to lake views, stay in some of the area's most beautiful villages and still keep your budget in check. They're the kind of places we'd happily book again.

Hotel Belvedere Bellagio ($$): A family-owned hotel that has been running in Bellagio for generations. It sits above the village with a pool, a terrace with lake views and rooms that are comfortable and clearly cared for. The price is far more accessible than the grand Bellagio addresses while keeping you walking distance from everything. If you want Bellagio without the Villa Serbelloni rate, this is the one.
Hotel Lenno ($$): Lenno is on the western shore near Villa Balbianello, one of the most beautiful historic villas on the lake, and this stretch is one most visitors skip entirely. The hotel is small, simple and personal, with a lake-view terrace and a village that's still quiet in a way Bellagio stopped being a long time ago. Good for a slower trip, and the walking and boat access to the quieter western villages is underrated.
Hotel la Darsena ($-$$): A well-run lakeside property on the western shore near Menaggio with direct water access and the kind of unfussy Italian hospitality that makes a trip feel relaxed. The location is practical for ferries to Bellagio and Varenna. The rooms are clean and comfortable without the design ambitions of the pricier places. A straightforward base at a price that makes a longer stay work.
Ostello Bello Lake Como ($): The best budget option on the lake and the most sociable. Ostello Bello has built a reputation across northern Italy for well-designed hostel accommodation with private room options and good common areas. The Como city location puts you at the start of the ferry network with the train to Milan 30 minutes away. For solo travelers, couples on a tight budget or anyone who'd rather spend the money on ferry tickets and gelato, this is the answer.

Booking Tips for Lake Como

Lake Como runs on ferries and geography more than most destinations, and a few things are worth knowing before you commit to a base.

Check the ferry timetable before you book the hotel. The central lake service connecting Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia runs frequently. Everything outside that triangle runs far less often, and the last boat back is earlier than you'd expect. A hotel five minutes from a well-served dock beats a prettier one that strands you.

Don't assume you need a car. The lakeside roads are narrow, slow and often gridlocked in summer, and parking in the villages is limited and expensive. Most hotels on this list charge for it. Trains to Como and Varenna from Milan plus the ferry network cover almost everything.

Book at least a few months ahead for May to September. The lake has a limited number of rooms and the good ones at every price point go early. This is more true here than in a city, where there's always something left.

Stay at least two nights. The day-trippers clear out in the late afternoon and the evenings and early mornings are the best part of being here. One night doesn't give you enough of that to justify the trip.

Check what “lake view” actually means. Plenty of rooms are sold with a lake view that turns out to be partial, angled or from a shared terrace. If the view is the reason you're booking, read the room description rather than the hotel description.

It depends what you want. Bellagio is the most famous and the most scenic but also the busiest. Varenna is quieter, feels more Italian and is our preference for a slower or more romantic trip. Como city is the most practical for transport, restaurants and day trips. Menaggio and the western shore villages are the pick if you want to avoid the Bellagio crowds entirely.

How far is Lake Como from Milan?

Como city is about 50 km north of Milan with direct trains in 30 to 40 minutes. Varenna also has a direct train, which makes it easier to reach than Bellagio despite feeling further away. Bellagio takes longer by road or ferry. It works as a day trip from Milan but two nights is the minimum for anything more than a look.

Is Lake Como better as a day trip or an overnight stay?

Overnight, every time. The day-trippers clear out by late afternoon and what's left is one of the better evenings in Italy. The morning light on the water with almost nobody around is the reason people come back. A single night in any of the lake towns changes it from a photo stop into a trip.

Are Airbnbs good on Lake Como?

Yes, and we've used them across the lake. This is one of the better places in Italy for them, particularly for groups or longer stays. The good ones give you private lake access, a terrace on the water and the option to cook with what you find at the local markets. Varenna, Lenno and Menaggio have the strongest selection. Book early and prioritize direct lake views or garden access over interior apartments.

For most people, Villa Flori is where we'd start. We stayed there, the views are what you came for and the price is reachable in a way the grand hotels aren't. If the trip is the occasion, Grand Hotel Tremezzo or Villa d'Este. If the budget is tight, Hotel Belvedere in Bellagio or Ostello Bello in Como, both of which put you on the lake for a fraction of the rest of this list.
