Where to Stay in Cologne: Cathedral Quarter, the Rhine and the Best Neighborhoods

We have been to Cologne twice, once in June and once for the Christmas markets, and we are going back for Carnival. Choosing where to stay in Cologne is a more interesting decision than it first appears, because the city has three genuinely distinct areas that suit different kinds of trips: the Cathedral quarter in the Altstadt, the east bank of the Rhine in Deutz and the Neustadt neighborhoods south of the Old Town, which are better than most visitors realize.

We stayed at the Mercure in the Neustadt-Süd on both trips and found it an excellent base. Every other hotel in this guide comes from in-depth research across multiple platforms. We go further than the photos and the star ratings: we look at what guests who know what they are doing actually say about service, value and what the rooms are really like. We only include hotels we would book ourselves.

Your Guide to Where to Stay in Cologne

Best Area for a First Visit: The Dom Quarter and Altstadt

The Cathedral quarter is the obvious starting point and there is a good reason every first-time visitor ends up here. The Dom itself is extraordinary: 157 metres tall, 632 years in the building and one of the finest Gothic structures in the world. Having it on your doorstep changes the experience of the city in a way that is hard to fully explain until you walk out of your hotel in the morning and it is just there, filling the skyline.

Beyond the Cathedral, the Altstadt gives you the Rhine waterfront, the Hohenzollernbrücke covered in love locks, the Museum Ludwig with one of the best modern art collections in Germany and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum for everything from medieval to Impressionist. The main pedestrian shopping streets, the Schildergasse and Hohe Strasse, run south from the Dom and are among the busiest in Germany. And the traditional brewery houses, Früh am Dom and Gaffel Bräuhaus among others, are right here in the old city, which matters when Kölsch is the whole point of being in Cologne.

In December the Cathedral quarter becomes the center of the Christmas market action. The market directly in front of the Dom is the most famous and genuinely magical, especially after dark when the Cathedral is lit up behind the stalls. The Heumarkt market a short walk south is one of the largest in the city. The energy in this area during market season is unlike anywhere else we have been in Germany.

The tradeoff is price and tourist density. Dom-adjacent hotels are the most expensive in the city and the area around the Cathedral in peak season is very busy. But for a first visit or a short trip where being central from the moment you arrive is the priority, the Cathedral quarter earns what it charges.

Hotels in the Dom Quarter and Altstadt

Excelsior Hotel Ernst am Dom ($$$$): Directly opposite the Cathedral since 1863, this is the most iconic address in Cologne. The rooms facing the Dom give you one of the most memorable hotel views in Germany and the interiors are grand without being stuffy. The service is polished, the restaurant is one of the best in the city and the location puts the Christmas markets, the Rhine promenade and the Old Town right outside the door. If you are going to spend money on one night in Cologne, this is where to spend it.
Maritim Hotel Köln ($$$): A reliable four-star in a genuinely good position in the Altstadt at Heumarkt, one of the main Christmas market locations. The Maritim does the fundamentals consistently well: solid breakfast, comfortable rooms and a level of service that makes it a dependable choice for families and couples. Good value for the Altstadt location and a strong pick if you want the old city without paying Dom-front prices.

Best Area for Cathedral Views: Deutz and the Rhine

Deutz sits on the east bank of the Rhine directly across from the Altstadt, and staying here changes the way you see Cologne. From the west bank you are looking up at the Cathedral from below. From Deutz you see the whole skyline laid out across the water, the Dom flanked by the old city and the Rhine bridges in the foreground. It is one of the best urban views in Germany and most visitors only experience it as a day trip across the bridge.

The Hohenzollernbrücke connects Deutz to the Cathedral quarter in around 15 minutes on foot and the Deutz S-Bahn station gives you fast connections to the rest of the city and to Cologne/Bonn Airport. The trade fair grounds, Messe Köln, are also in Deutz, which makes this the obvious choice if you are here for an exhibition or conference. Outside of those periods, the east bank is quieter than the tourist center and noticeably more affordable for equivalent hotel quality.

If you have been to Cologne before and want a different perspective on the city, literally and figuratively, Deutz is where to base yourself. The morning light on the Cathedral from the Rhine promenade in Deutz is the view that defines the city.

Hotels in Deutz and Along the Rhine

Hyatt Regency Köln ($$$$): The best Cathedral-view hotel in Cologne, sitting directly on the Rhine at Kennedy-Ufer in Deutz. The rooms facing the Dom give you that full skyline panorama that Cathedral-side hotels simply cannot offer. Spacious rooms, polished service and a calmer setting than the busy tourist center across the water. The bridge walk to the Old Town takes around 15 minutes and the position is hard to argue with for that combination of view and quality.
The Deutz, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel ($$$): A contemporary Rhine-side hotel in Deutz with direct Cathedral views from many rooms. Part of Marriott's portfolio of individually-styled properties, it delivers solid design and good service at a price point below the Hyatt. A strong option if you want the east bank experience and a more modern aesthetic, or if you want Cathedral views without the full Hyatt price tag.

Best Area for Value and Local Feel: The Neustadt and Innenstadt

The Neustadt is the part of Cologne that rewards visitors who look beyond the Cathedral. The neighborhoods south and west of the Altstadt, bounded by the famous ring boulevards, are where the city actually lives: local restaurants, independent shops, bars that are not built around tourists and a pace that feels genuinely different from the Cathedral quarter.

Neustadt-Nord is where the Belgian Quarter sits, one of the best neighborhoods in Cologne full stop. The streets here are named after Belgian cities, Brüsseler Strasse and Aachener Strasse among them, and the area has been a hub for independent food and drink for years. Rudolfplatz and its medieval Hahnentorburg gate is the neighborhood's focal point. The quality of the restaurants and cafes is noticeably higher than the tourist-facing options near the Dom and the atmosphere after dark is genuinely local.

Neustadt-Süd is quieter and more residential, with the Volksgarten city park and a calmer feel. This is where we stayed and it suited a trip focused on getting around all the Christmas market sites rather than staying in one part of the city. The tram to the Cathedral takes a few minutes and the connection to the Heumarkt market was just as easy.

For first-timers who want to be in the middle of everything, the Altstadt makes more sense. But for a second visit, a longer trip, a tighter budget or simply a preference for how a city actually feels when you are living in it rather than visiting it, the Neustadt is the right call.

Hotels in the Neustadt and Innenstadt

Wasserturm Hotel Cologne, Curio Collection by Hilton ($$$$): The most distinctive hotel in Cologne, housed inside a 19th-century water tower that was once the largest in Europe. The circular rooms are unlike anything else in the city: designed with real flair, full of character and genuinely comfortable. This is a design hotel with actual history behind it rather than a fabricated concept and the difference shows. If you want a stay that is worth talking about in its own right, the Wasserturm is the Cologne answer.
Hotel Chelsea ($$$): One of Cologne's most characterful boutique hotels, in the Belgian Quarter. The Chelsea has been collecting contemporary art for decades and every room, corridor and common space reflects it. No two rooms are the same, the atmosphere is genuinely creative and it draws an interesting crowd. A tram ride from the Cathedral and one of the very few hotels in Cologne with a real personality.
Pullman Cologne ($$$): A sleek four-star in the city center with well-appointed rooms, a good breakfast and consistent service. A dependable choice for business travelers and couples who want comfortable central accommodation without the boutique gamble. Good position for the shopping streets, the Altstadt and the Rhine.
Mercure Hotel Koeln Belfortstrasse ($$): We have stayed here twice and it is our base in Cologne. The family rooms are genuinely good, the Belfortstrasse location is within walking distance of more than most guides suggest and the tram puts the Cathedral a few minutes away. Comfortable, well-run and a fraction of the price of anything near the Dom. Whether we have come in June or for the Christmas markets, it has worked well every time.

Where We Stayed in Cologne

We have stayed at the Mercure Hotel Koeln Belfortstrasse twice and it is our default in Cologne. The first trip was in June, exploring the city properly: the Cathedral, the Rhine, the Belgian Quarter, the breweries. The second was for the Christmas markets. Both times the Belfortstrasse location worked well. The Neustadt-Süd is calm and residential and the tram to the Cathedral takes a few minutes. The Belgian Quarter is close enough to walk to for dinner and the food there is noticeably better than anything in the Cathedral area at the same price.

The family rooms at the Mercure are a genuine selling point. They are well laid out and good value compared to what equivalent space would cost near the Dom. For a city trip with teenagers, this matters.

For the Christmas markets specifically: Cologne runs several markets across different neighborhoods rather than just one central site, and being based in the Neustadt-Süd with tram access to all of them made more sense than being pinned to the Dom market. We covered the Cathedral market, the Heumarkt and the harbor market at the Schokoladen Museum without any difficulty.

We are going back for Carnival and the Mercure is already booked. If we ever go for a longer stay with a bigger budget, the Wasserturm is on the list for the experience and the Hyatt for that Rhine view. But as a base for actually getting around and seeing the city, the Neustadt-Süd has been right every time.

What to Know Before You Book in Cologne

If you are visiting for the Christmas markets, book as early as you possibly can. The markets run from late November through December and the best hotels sell out weeks in advance. Cologne Carnival in February is one of the largest street festivals in Europe and fills the city just as completely. If your dates overlap with Carnival week, book immediately and expect to pay more than usual.

Kölsch, Cologne's local beer, is only brewed in Cologne and is served in traditional glasses called Stangen by a waiter called a Köbes. Do not cover your glass with a coaster unless you are done: the Köbes will keep bringing rounds until you signal you have had enough. The traditional brewery houses in the Altstadt, Früh am Dom and Gaffel Bräuhaus among others, are worth a session at least. This is as much a part of the Cologne experience as the Cathedral.

All three areas in this guide connect to the Cathedral and Old Town easily. From Deutz it is a 15-minute walk across the bridge. From the Neustadt it is a short tram ride. Parking in the center is limited and expensive: if you are driving, check whether your hotel has parking or plan to use public transport from the outskirts. Is Deutz a good place to stay in Cologne?

Yes, especially if the Cathedral view matters to you. The east bank of the Rhine gives you the full Cologne skyline across the water, which is one of the best urban views in Germany. You are 15 minutes on foot from the Old Town across the Hohenzollernbrücke and hotel prices are better than equivalent Cathedral-side properties. It also works well as a base if you are attending an event at Messe Köln.

How many days do you need in Cologne?

Two to three days covers the Cathedral, the Old Town, a Rhine walk and at least one proper session in a traditional brewery house. Add a day for the Museum Ludwig, a walk through the Belgian Quarter and a day trip to Bonn or along the Rhine Valley. During the Christmas markets, three days is the right amount for covering all the main market sites without rushing.

For a first visit, the Dom Quarter and Altstadt is the right base: everything is walkable and the Cathedral on your doorstep is as good as advertised. For the best views in the city, Deutz is where to look, with the Hyatt delivering those Cathedral panoramas from across the Rhine. The Neustadt is the smart move for second visits, budget-conscious trips and anyone who wants to experience the side of Cologne that the Cathedral crowds never quite find.

Whatever you book, do not skip the brewery houses. Kölsch is only brewed here and drinking it in a traditional Brauhaus in the Altstadt is as much a part of Cologne as the Dom. Order in rounds and do not cover your glass.
