Luxembourg City Travel Podcast: Why We Keep Going Back
Luxembourg City has become one of our favorite quick getaways, and this trip, taken over a long weekend with family visiting, was our fourth time there. We actually fell for it a bit by accident: a planned birthday trip to a remote wine region a couple years back went sideways (the dog was so spooked by the property that we left early), and we ended up booking a last-minute hotel in Luxembourg City instead. It turned out to be one of our favorite stays in Europe.
Our Luxembourg City Recap
What stands out most about Luxembourg City is how different the upper and lower parts feel. The historic center sits above the river gorge, while the lower city is quieter and more residential, with parks, walking paths and beautiful architecture.
It is also one of the easiest cities we have visited for getting around. Public transportation is free, and there are elevators and walkways that make it surprisingly simple to move between the different levels of the city.
The Casemates and Old Town
The Bock Casemates are one of the main things we talk about in the episode. The tunnels run beneath the old city and give you a completely different look at Luxembourg’s history.
We also talk about Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Grand Ducal Palace and some of the food stops we found around the old town.
Little Switzerland
One of our favorite parts of this trip was actually outside the city.
About 30 minutes away is the area known as Little Switzerland, with narrow rock passages, suspension bridges and hiking trails through the forest. It is one of the places that made us realize Luxembourg has a lot more to offer than just the capital.
Why We Keep Going Back
Luxembourg City works really well for a long weekend because it is compact, easy to explore and has enough around it to make repeat trips feel different.
We still have more we want to see, especially some of the castles, smaller towns and spa areas outside the city, which is a big reason we keep talking about going back.
