We have been to Rome multiple times and stayed across the city. We have done the Spanish Steps area properly at Hotel Hassler, which is as good as its reputation suggests. We have stayed at Inn at the Spanish Steps with a group, which gave us the same great location without the full Hassler price tag. We stayed at Mercure Rome Colosseum when the priority was the Colosseum and value rather than luxury, and it delivered on both. And whenever we book an Airbnb in Rome, it is always in Monti: walkable, local, close to the ancient sites and consistently our favorite part of the city to actually live in for a few days.

Yes, particularly if ancient Rome is the primary focus of your trip. The Monti neighborhood puts you within walking distance of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill while giving you a genuinely characterful base. Hotels directly adjacent to the Colosseum tend to be overpriced for what they deliver. Monti is the smarter version of the same proximity.
