We have been to Salzburg twice and stayed in two very different parts of the city. The first trip we were at the NH Collection, which we genuinely loved as a hotel. The rooms are well-designed, the breakfast is solid and the whole operation is professional. The walk to the Old Town is real, around 15 minutes, and on a cold evening that matters. The second trip we stayed at the Hotel Master Linzergasse with Lisa and our dog Rex. Dylan was not on this one. We had a suite with a separate bedroom and a sofa that pulled out to a queen, which gave us plenty of room for the three of us. The Linzer Gasse location is excellent and we would go back on the next trip without a second thought.

Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Salzburg

The Old Town (Altstadt) is the most atmospheric place to base yourself in Salzburg. The streets around the Getreidegasse, Mozartplatz and the cathedral are genuinely beautiful at every hour and the fortress above gives the whole neighborhood a backdrop that changes with the light. Hotels here carry a premium for the position and the pedestrianized lanes mean arriving with luggage requires some planning. For first-time visitors who want to step straight into the heart of things, it is the right choice.

Linzer Gasse and the Neustadt is where we spent our second Salzburg trip and it is our preference for return visits. The right bank of the Salzach is quieter and more residential than the Old Town, with a long street of local restaurants, independent shops and some of the best small hotels in the city. The walk across any of the bridges into the Old Town takes about ten minutes and the neighborhood has enough character that you never feel like you are staying somewhere secondary.

The Mirabell area sits between the main train station and the river and covers hotels near the famous Mirabell Palace and gardens. It is a practical mid-range location with good bus connections and a short walk to the Neustadt. The Motel One Mirabell is the budget anchor of this area and one of the best-positioned budget hotels in any Austrian city.

Near the Station (Schallmoos) is where the NH Collection and other larger chain hotels cluster, east of the river toward the main train station. The neighborhood is functional rather than atmospheric and the walk to the Old Town is longer than it looks on a map. It has the kind of historic atmosphere that no new-build can manufacture and the location puts you at the center of everything the moment you step outside.
Schloss Mönchstein ($$$$): A 15th-century castle on Mönchsberg hill with just 16 rooms, a panoramic terrace and a restaurant with views over the entire city. This is the most exclusive address in Salzburg and the experience of staying above the Old Town rather than in it is genuinely unlike anything else here.

NH Collection Salzburg ($$$): Our first Salzburg stay and a hotel we would happily return to. The rooms are well-designed, the breakfast is solid and the operation is professional throughout. Imlauer Hotel Pitter ($$-$$$): A long-established Salzburg hotel on the right bank with a rooftop terrace, reliable rooms and strong consistent reviews. It is not the most stylish option on this list but it delivers quality at a fair price and the location is more central than the NH Collection.
Imlauer Hotel Brau ($$): A brewery-hotel in the Schallmoos neighborhood with its own pub and restaurant on-site. The atmosphere is more relaxed than the center options and the combination of decent rooms, in-house dining and the brewery connection makes it a good choice for travelers who want character at a reasonable price.

What to Know Before You Book in Salzburg

Festival season runs late July through August when the Salzburg Festival fills the city with opera and classical music visitors. Prices rise significantly across all categories and the better hotels sell out months in advance. If you are visiting in that window, book early and expect to pay well above the standard rate.

Salzburg is compact. The Old Town is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes and most of the major sights are close together. A hotel on the Linzer Gasse side puts you ten minutes from the Old Town on foot, close enough that the slightly lower prices make real sense. Hotels near the station are practical for arrivals but better suited to travelers who want to drop bags quickly and navigate from there.

Dogs are more welcome in Salzburg hotels than you might expect, but always confirm before booking. The Hotel Master Linzergasse was excellent for our dog Rex. The city is easy with a dog — the riverbanks, Mirabell gardens and the paths up Mönchsberg are all good for walking.

The NH Collection is the right call if you want a hotel that delivers on quality without an Old Town premium. And if the Motel One Mirabell is available at a good rate, that Mirabell Palace location is hard to pass up at any budget level.
