Where to Stay in Aarhus:

From the Cathedral and the Latin Quarter to the harbor, the best hotels in Denmark's second city.

Aarhus surprised us. We expected Denmark's second city to feel like a quieter version of Copenhagen but it has its own thing going on entirely. The Latin Quarter is genuinely lovely, ARoS is one of the best art museums we have visited anywhere and the food scene is seriously good. It is also a great city to have with kids, which we can confirm firsthand.

The city is compact enough that most good hotels are within easy reach of everything. The center and the Cathedral quarter are the obvious base, with the cultural area around ARoS and the harbor just east of that. These are the hotels we would book, from the grand historic Hotel Royal to the best budget stays near the station.

Is Aarhus worth visiting?

Absolutely. Aarhus is one of our favorite Scandinavian cities and it tends to surprise people who come expecting a smaller version of Copenhagen. Two to three days is the sweet spot.

The city center around the Cathedral and the Latin Quarter is the most atmospheric choice and puts you within walking distance of most of the main sights. The cultural quarter near ARoS and the Musikhuset is also excellent. Near the station works well for budget stays and easy connections. Aarhus is compact enough that no area leaves you stranded.
