🇸🇮 Slovenia Travel Guide

Slovenia may be small, but our Slovenia travel guide shows why it’s one of the most beautiful countries we’ve visited in Europe. We’ve been here a few times and keep finding new reasons to come back. On our first trip, we based ourselves outside Ljubljana and explored the city’s old town and cafés along the river. On later visits, we stayed in Ljubljana and lived like locals.

What we love most about Slovenia is how easy it is to enjoy both the city and the outdoors in one trip. Ljubljana is full of energy, with historic streets, great food and a relaxed pace that makes it easy to settle in. Just a short drive away, Lake Bled feels completely different, peaceful, scenic and perfect for slowing down.

This Slovenia travel guide brings together tips and highlights from our trips so far. As we keep exploring, we’ll add more blog posts and guides to help you plan your own time here.

Ljubljana

A Relaxed Capital with Plenty to Explore

Ljubljana is one of our favorite smaller European capitals. The city is compact and walkable, which makes it easy to explore without feeling rushed. We loved wandering along the Ljubljanica River, crossing the Dragon Bridge and exploring the colorful old town filled with cafés and small shops.

The main landmarks are close together so you can see a lot in one day. Triple Bridge, Prešeren Square and the views from Ljubljana Castle are all within a short walk. The castle climb is worth it but you can also take the funicular if you prefer.

One of our favorite parts of Ljubljana is the food scene, with cozy cafés along the river and small restaurants putting a modern twist on traditional dishes. The pace of the city is laid back, which makes it easy to slow down and enjoy simple things like sitting outside with coffee, people-watching in the main square or walking through Tivoli Park. Ljubljana feels lively but relaxed, which is why we keep coming back. Read our Ljubljana guide →
