Our First Trip to Zermatt
Our first visit started with a delayed flight and a late-night drive through a snowstorm. By the time we reached Zermatt, it was around three in the morning and the train station was completely quiet.
Because Zermatt is car-free, we still had to figure out how to get ourselves and our luggage to the Airbnb. We eventually found one of the small electric vehicles that operate in town, got most of the way there and celebrated finally arriving with panettone.
The next day we headed toward Glacier Paradise, but weather closed the second gondola section. We only made it to the midpoint, which turned out to be a great day anyway. The snow eventually cleared enough for us to get our first real look at the Matterhorn.
Our Second Trip to Zermatt
The second time, we went back in October and finally made it all the way to Glacier Paradise.
The views from the top were completely different from our first trip, and we also had time to do more on the ground. We hiked the Gorner Gorge and visited the small mountaineers’ cemetery in town, which gives you a very different look at Zermatt’s history.
What We Love About Zermatt
Zermatt is expensive, but it is also one of those places where the setting makes it feel worth the splurge. It is entirely walkable, the town itself is beautiful and the food is exactly what you want after a cold day outside. Fondue, raclette and rösti are all part of the experience for us.
The biggest reason we keep talking about going back is simple: both trips felt completely different, and we still feel like there is more to do.
