Guide to Fall Drinks Across Europe

Because cozy season deserves a proper pour..

Fall in Europe has its own kind of magic. The air cools down, the markets smell like cinnamon and baked apples and every country seems to have its signature drink for the season. From cider houses in France to whiskey bars in Ireland we’ve picked up a few favorites along the way.

Whether you’re traveling this fall or just want a little taste of Europe at home, these are the drinks we keep coming back to. The ones that remind us of crisp days, foggy mornings and slow evenings around the table.

Apple Cider Spritz

Where we had it: Alsace, France
A fall twist on Italy’s classic summer spritz. This version swaps prosecco for apple cider and adds a touch of warmth with cinnamon. It’s the perfect crossover drink for that first cool night when you’re still holding onto summer.
Recipe:
2 oz cider
1 oz Aperol
3 oz prosecco
Dash of cinnamon
Garnish: apple slices and star anise

Ginger Pom Mule

Where we had it: Prague, Czech Republic
This one hits all the right notes. Sharp ginger, tart pomegranate and just enough lime to keep it bright. It’s the kind of drink that fits a Christmas market or a cozy café after a long day of sightseeing.
Recipe:
2 oz vodka
1 oz fresh lime juice
1/3 cup pomegranate juice
3/4 cup ginger beer
Garnish: lime wedge

Irish Old Fashioned

Where we had it: Dublin, Ireland
Ireland knows how to do whiskey right and this version proves it. A touch of brown sugar softens the edge and gives it that fall comfort without losing the bite.
Recipe:
3 dashes bitters
3 oz Irish whiskey
1 tsp brown sugar
Garnish: orange peel

Fall Sangria

Where we had it: Barcelona, Spain
This sangria trades summer berries for crisp apples, pears and cinnamon. It’s the kind of drink that makes you want to sit outside in a sweater even when the air’s a little too cold.
Recipe:
1 bottle dry white wine
2 cups cider
Apple slices
Pear slices
Garnish: cinnamon stick

Hot Spiked Cider

Where we had it: Normandy, France
Normandy’s known for its apple orchards and this warm cider is a staple once the chill sets in. It’s simple, classic and smells better than any candle.
Recipe:
1 bottle apple juice
1 orange studded with cloves
Cinnamon sticks
1/2 cup spiced rum
Garnish: cinnamon stick

Apple Cider Margarita

Where we had it: Lake Como, Italy
Italy isn’t known for tequila but this one surprised us. The maple syrup adds depth and the cider gives it a European twist. It’s smooth, sweet and perfect for a fall evening by the water.
Recipe:
2 oz tequila
1/2 oz orange liqueur
Juice of 1/2 lime
1 tsp maple syrup
Garnish: apple slice and cinnamon stick

There’s no one perfect fall drink. Some lean cozy and spiced while others stay crisp and refreshing. Whether you reach for cider, whiskey, or wine, the best one is the one that feels right for the moment. Here’s to cool nights, long talks and a little warmth in your glass.
