We stopped in Brussels on the way home from a week in the Belgium countryside. We only stayed 2 nights, but definitely plan to return. There are three things you will see everywhere in Brussels, chocolate shops, waffles and Masseken Pis. You know the statue of the kid peeing? Peeing souvenirs are everywhere! We did go see the statue live, because well you have to right? It was much smaller than I expected but still, check it out. The chocolate shops abound in Brussels. They are everywhere you look and they each deserve a taste. There cannot be any diets or calorie counting in Brussels. Everyone will have their own favorite but make sure to try Pierre Marcolini, Laurent Gerbaud and Chocolatier Mary. There are lots of chocolate making workshops but make sure you book early as they fill up. The waffles are plentiful as well and they come in so many different ways: covered in chocolate seems like the best way to try both treats in one.
The Baroque architecture is all over the old town in Brussels so wandering around is great way to experience it. But, if you are short on time, don’t miss the Grand-Place square. It is everything its name promises. There are cute little outdoor cafes and chocolate shops. Grab yourself a drink and sit to soak in the surroundings. It really is beautiful.
Parks for kids and dogs. Brussels outdoor space does not disappoint. The botanical gardens are really lovely and surprisingly dog friendly. We wandered around there every morning. It was a quiet and beautiful way to start the day. The big city park is Royal Park. It is big and full of trails, playgrounds, art and a forest. When we were there the main walkway was lined with a fun art installation. We also went to see the Atomium. It’s the huge structure with 9 big metal balls. It is located in an enormous park where you and the kids and dogs can explore for hours. Then visit the Atomium and see the view from a different perspective. There is even a restaurant in case you get hungry.
Other food and drink not to be missed: Mussels and fries are always a good idea. Pair them with a local beer. Cheese in Brussels is also worth a mention. The cheese shops around are drool worthy.
