Affordable European Adventure: From the Netherlands to Sardinia and Back

Welcome to the getAwayZ! We are two friends, Erin and Lisa, a dog, Rex, and a teenage boy, Dylan – who moved from the USA to Europe 7 years ago in search of new experiences and opportunities. Our focus is on affordable European adventures, with a splurge or two thrown in.

We started our European life in Italy, where we lived for six incredible years. During this time, we explored the country, from the bustling, big cities to the charming countryside. Although we moved to the Netherlands 2 years ago, Italy is still in our hearts. We find ourselves back there every summer since leaving. You can read more about us here.

Follow along as we document our entire journey this summer to Sardinia. We will travel through Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Italy during our roadtrip to Sardinia. We will document in real time what money we spend as 3 adults (for the most part, my son is 16) and 1 dog.

JOURNEY OVERVIEW: NETHERLANDS TO SARDINIA AND BACK

Embarking on a road trip from the Netherlands to Sardinia might sound like an extravagant adventure, but with careful planning and budgeting, it’s more affordable than you might think. We’re spending four weeks in Sardinia and taking a week to get there, with a quick three-day drive back. Here’s how we are doing it on a budget and how you can too.  Obviously we are so lucky to be able to work from anywhere and travel for so long, but maybe this can inspire a 1 or 2 week adventure that you didn’t know if you could afford.

ACCOMODATIONS

We booked affordable Airbnb/VRBO pet-friendly accommodations along our route. Opting mostly for places with kitchen facilities allowed us to cook our meals and save on dining out. If we are choosing a hotel, we have a couple of hotel brands we choose because of price and quality.

TRANSPORTATION

Driving our car instead of flying significantly cut down on travel costs. Fuel can be pricey, but it’s still cheaper than multiple plane tickets, especially when traveling with a dog. Plus, it gave us the flexibility to explore off-the-beaten-path locations. I will be covering in a future post a breakdown for rental cars, and how I find cheap flights from the US to Europe.

DAILY BUDGET

We booked and paid for all of our accommodations in the earlier part of the year, I will include the accommodation costs in our total of the day, but it isn’t what we were out of pocket for the actual day.  I find having those expenses out of the way, if possible, removes a lot of money anxiety during the trip.

Traveling through Europe on a budget is entirely possible with some planning and flexibility. By documenting our daily expenses and experiences, we hope to inspire others to embark on their own affordable European adventures.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. We hope our adventures and tips help you plan your next trip. Stay tuned for more updates and happy travels!
