Prague: What We Did, What We Ate, Where We Stayed

Prague is one of those cities that feels like it’s been pulled straight from a storybook—complete with castles, quirky surprises, and amazing food. Over three visits, we’ve uncovered the best things to do, see, and eat, plus the spots we loved staying in. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your trip.

WHAT WE DID

Exploring Old Town

We love Prague! We have been 3 times in the last few years. We always begin our trips to Prague by diving into the heart of Old Town. An old car tour gave us a great overview of the city (we do this every time we go), but nothing beats walking through Old Town Square, watching the Astronomical Clock chime, and soaking up the gothic vibes. The nearby Jewish Quarter offers a quieter, more reflective experience, with its striking architecture and deep historical significance.

Iconic Landmarks

No visit to Prague is complete without walking across the Charles Bridge. The view from the bridge is beautiful, but climbing the tower gave us an even better perspective of the city’s skyline. From there, we went to Prague Castle, explored the gardens, and checked out St. Vitus Cathedral—it’s definitely worth a visit.

Not As Iconic Landmarks

Prague isn’t just about history—it’s full of unique spots. We checked out the Lennon Wall, covered in graffiti, and then wandered through a narrow alley near Shakespeare and Sons that’s controlled by a traffic light—it’s just wide enough for one person at a time. The Dancing House and Kafka Head sculpture were also worth seeing, and we couldn’t miss the Žižkov TV Tower with its crawling baby sculptures—odd but strangely fascinating as our airbnb was directly across the street.

Off Beat Tours

One of the more unusual things we did was a tour of a nuclear bomb shelter—a strange and eerie look into Cold War history. We have also gone twice to a medieval dinner: good food, fire shows, and a lively vibe. Definitely more of a tourist attraction, but we had a great time.

WHAT WE ATE

Czech food did not disappoint. We started with trdelník, the famous chimney cakes, which we bought from street vendors and Dylan was in heaven. We also enjoyed svíčková, a rich dish of marinated beef with creamy sauce, and goulash with dumplings, as they are perfect on a chilly day.
And of course, no trip to Prague is complete without tasting the beer. We made sure to sample multiple Pilsners, brewed fresh in the city that gave birth to this iconic style of beer.

WHERE WE STAYED

During our first trip, we stayed at the Hilton Hotel, which was perfect for New Year’s Eve. The hotel threw a huge party, and we were about a 20 minute walk from the Old Town.
On our second trip, we stayed in an Airbnb in Praha 2. It was a great location, giving us easy access to the quieter, more residential side of Prague while still being close enough to the main attractions. The metro was right next door and it was a 10 minute ride to the Old Town.
For the third trip, Lisa and her sisters stayed in an Airbnb in Praha 1, right in the heart of the city. It was the perfect location for exploring on foot the Old Town and its surroundings.

Prague is a city that keeps us coming back. From its historic charm to its modern quirks, there’s always something new to discover. Whether it’s wandering the streets, tasting chimney cakes, or exploring a nuclear bomb shelter, Prague offers something for everyone.
