Where to Stay in Cologne:

From the Cathedral and the Altstadt to the Rhine, the best hotels in one of Germany's great cities.

Cologne is the kind of German city that earns more love the more time you spend in it. The Cathedral is extraordinary and yes, everyone goes there first, but the city has a lot more going on: the Rhine, the Altstadt, a great bar and brewery scene and the Christmas markets in December, which are genuinely some of the best we have been to anywhere. We came for the markets and left wanting to come back.

The Dom quarter is the obvious base and the most central, but the Neustadt neighborhoods south of the Old Town offer better value and a more local feel with easy tram connections to everything. Across the Rhine in Deutz you get those famous Cathedral views from the other bank. These are the hotels we would book across all three areas.

Best Areas to Stay in Cologne:

Around the Cathedral (Dom) and the Altstadt. The most central area, with the Dom, the Rhine waterfront, the Christmas markets and the main museums all within walking distance. The obvious choice for first-time visitors and Christmas market trips. Hotels here command a premium but the convenience is hard to argue with.
The Rhine and Deutz. The east bank of the Rhine gives you the iconic view of the Cathedral and the Cologne skyline from across the water. Quieter than the tourist center, well connected by bridge, and home to some of the city's best hotel values with a view. Also close to the Koelnmesse exhibition center.
The Neustadt and the Innenstadt. The neighborhoods south and west of the Old Town, including the Neustadt-Nord and Neustadt-Sud. More local in feel, good tram connections to the Cathedral and Old Town, and noticeably better value than the Dom-side properties. Where you stay if you want Cologne at a slightly lower volume.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Belfortstrasse location puts you in the Neustadt-Sud, a residential neighborhood south of the Old Town with easy tram access to the Cathedral and all the main market sites. The rooms are comfortable, the staff are helpful and the value compared to the properties right by the Dom is significant. A smart choice if you want a bit of local atmosphere and easy connections without tourist-center prices.

Cologne is worth giving more time than most people do. The Cathedral is extraordinary but it is the combination of the Rhine, the Altstadt, the breweries and the Christmas markets in December that makes it a genuinely full destination. If you are visiting for the markets, book as early as you can: the city fills fast in November and December and the best properties go weeks in advance.

FAQ About Staying in Cologne

What is Cologne known for?

Cologne is known for the extraordinary Cologne Cathedral, one of the finest Gothic buildings in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is also famous for its Christmas markets, which are among the best in Germany, for Kolsch beer served in the traditional small glasses, for the Rhine waterfront and for a strong art and museum scene including the Museum Ludwig and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum.

When is the best time to visit Cologne?

Cologne is worth visiting year-round but the Christmas market season from late November through December is particularly special. The city hosts several markets including the famous one directly in front of the Cathedral. Summer is pleasant for Rhine walks and outdoor dining. Cologne Carnival in February is one of the largest street festivals in Europe if you want a very different experience.

What is the best area to stay in Cologne?

The area around the Cathedral and the Altstadt is the most central and puts you within walking distance of the main sights, the Rhine and the Christmas markets. The Neustadt-Sud and Innenstadt are good alternatives with more local character and better value, both with easy tram access to the center. Deutz across the Rhine offers excellent Cathedral views and is quieter than the tourist center.

How many days do you need in Cologne?

Two to three days is enough for the main sights: the Cathedral, the Old Town, a Rhine walk, the Christmas markets in season and at least one proper Kolsch session in a traditional brewery. Add an extra day for the museums, a day trip to Bonn or a slower exploration of the Neustadt neighborhoods. Cologne also works well as a base for the wider Rhine Valley.

Is Cologne good for Christmas markets?

Cologne has some of the best Christmas markets in Germany. The most famous is the market directly in front of the Cathedral, which is genuinely magical, but the city actually runs several markets across different squares and neighborhoods throughout the season. Book hotels well in advance if you are visiting in November or December as the city fills quickly and the best properties go weeks ahead.
